art18Passing the PRAXIS II Art Content Knowledge exam (0133) is a certification requirement in some states for public school art teachers. Most candidates who take it have bachelor’s degrees in art education or art, and most have finished, or are in the process of finishing, their teaching practicum.

When taking the PRAXIS II Art: Content Knowledge Exam, candidates have two hours to answer 120 multiple-choice questions about three major areas of art study: the making of art; traditions in art, architecture, design, and the making of artifacts; and art criticism and aesthetics. About 47 questions (or 39 percent of the test) focus on making art; approximately 43 (36 percent) deal with traditions; and roughly 30 (25 percent) concern criticism and aesthetics.

It additionally contains questions regarding the materials and tools used to design and create such art, as well as the safety issues involved.

Traditions in Art, Architecture, Design, and the Making of Artifacts

Questions on the PRAXIS II Art: Content Knowledge test regarding traditions in art, architecture, design, and the making of artifacts concern art terms; different styles of art; techniques, concepts, and elements in art; non-Western and Western art periods; significant artists and their influences; art movements and schools; culture and art’s relationship; and the impact of politics, economics, and technology on art.

Art Criticism and Aesthetics

Questions on the PRAXIS II Art: Content Knowledge exam that deal with art criticism and aesthetics focus on art terms used for discussing design principles and traditional elements; modern art approaches and techniques; and the production of art and artifacts. Questions also concern the correlation between content and form. Test takers must additionally demonstrate their ability to interpret given works of art and to recognize elements shared by two or more works of art. They must also show that they have a fundamental grasp of art history, aesthetics, and criticism, and that they can apply basic concepts in art criticism to specific works.

Some questions on the PRAXIS II Art: Content Knowledge test are accompanied by illustrations, most of which are in color. Not all questions factor into the test score.
