If passing the PRAXIS II Middle School Mathematics Exam is a requirement in your state for obtaining certification in middle school math instruction, you’ll need to review a wide range of math concepts before taking it. The $90 test is two hours long. Graphing calculators are permitted.
The test consists of two sections. The 40-question multiple-choice portion is weighted most heavily at 67 percent. Ten of the questions in this section deal with geometry and measurement, specifically English systems of measurement. To study for the PRAXIS II Middle School Mathematics Exam in regard to these questions, be sure to review angles, arcs, circles, cones, lines, parallelograms, polygons, rectangles, reflections, rotations, squares, trapezoids, triangles, parameter, points, sectors, and surface area. Questions may also concern the volume of spheres, cylinders, solids, and prisms as well as the combinations of forms and the Pythagorean Theorem. Ten questions concern discrete mathematics, probability and data, and statistical concepts. A variety of ideas may be tested in this portion, including data analysis; dispersion; drawing conclusions from data; finite sample space; geometric probability; mean, median, and mode; probability; range and spread of data; and standard deviation.
Twelve questions on the PRAXIS II Middle School Mathematics Exam concern basic math and algebra concepts: absolute value, additive inverses, algebraic fractions, complex numbers, decimals, formulas, fractionals, fundamental mathematical processes, inequalities with fewer than two variables, line equations, nonlinear equations, numerical multiplicative and finite real numbers, operations entailing negative exponents, percentages, polynomials, powers, proportion, quadratic equations, radicals, rational and irrational numbers, real numbers classification, and roots. Eight questions are about functions and their graphs and may pertain to absolute value, applying mathematical models in multiple situations, domain values, equations, exponential and quadratic function, expressions, functions, notations, plane and function graphs, and step and linear function.
